Social Enterprise Zones

The UK government’s 21 Enterprise Zones, which are a part of the new budget, must embed social enterprise if they are going to be of benefit to communities and lift them out of deprivation. These Enterprise zones were to start with the urban areas of highest need in such cities as Greater Manchester, Sheffield and Liverpool. London would also get a zone once the mayor had picked a suitable location.

These new zones seem to have taken precedence over the Conservative’s idea of social enterprise zones from five years ago. There is some concern that the new zones will geographically restrict social enterprise support when it is needed across the entire UK, but the Social Enterprise coalition (SEC) is still keen to make sure that social enterprise is a part of the new zones, at the least.
