Local communities have been flooded with problems from the recent recession in the US, including poverty, homelessness, pollution, lack of quality education and other disparities. Due to a lack of fund, local governments have been forced to shut down social programs aimed providing solutions to these problems.
A social entrepreneur seeks to fill these gaps that have been left open in local communities as nonprofits have seen their donations decline as well. Social entrepreneurship is defined as recognizing a social problem and using entrepreneurial tactics to solve it. Developing for-profit companies with a nonprofit soul is a the heart of this movement.
These kind of companies put people and the environment first, but they depend on providing a product or service in order to be self-funding. Some examples of successful social entrepreneurship include TOM’s shoes, Better World Books, FEED projects, and EduCare.
