The Calvert Sustainability Research Department has submitted recommendations for changes to the Calvert Social Index, which is a broad-based and rigorously constructed benchmark for measuring the performance of US-based sustainable and social business.

This index is constructed by taking the 1000 largest companies in the US, based on total market cap, that are included in the Dow Jones Total Market Index (TMI). Calvert’s Sustainability Research Department then analyzes each company. They conduct a sustainability audit in the following areas: governance and ethics, environment, workplace, product safety and impact, community relations, international operation and human rights, and indigenous people’s rights.

The stocks that meet the Index’s sustainable and responsible criteria then make up the Calvert Social Index. Omnicare Inc. is recommended for deletion from the index on the grounds that it no longer meets standards for product marketing and safety.
