Fairtrade coffee, chocolate, and sugar are among many products that have gained massive support from consumers for good reason.
But now the Fairtrade Foundation’s portfolio is moving upmarket with the arrival of the first ever Fair trade and Fairmined gold.
The slabs of gold are no bigger than a chocolate bar and fit neatly in the palm of the hand, but they offer an alternative way to buy gold. The ingot of gold that made history, however, weighs about a kilo and was worth $40,900 at launch It came from the Cotapata mining co-operativei n Bolivia, which is the first source of gold to receive the Fairtrade Foundation certification.
The Fairtrade gold initiative is restricted to small-scale and artisanal miners who produce 200 to 300 tonnes of gold a year, although together they account for 10% of the global gold supplies and 90% of the labor.
