Lee Broughton is the head of corporate sustainability at Enterprise Holdings, and at a recent industry show speech he encouraged car rental companies to focus on the “triple bottom line”, meaning economic, social and environmental sustainability.

He also challenged the industry to start offering more fuel-efficient rental options as well as opportunities to offset carbon emissions associated with rentals. He urged car rental companies of all sizes to raise their level of awareness, action and communication.

Broughton noted that in addition to thousands of hybrids and electric vehicles, approximately 35% of Enterprise Holdings’ vehicles average a highway fuel efficiency rating of 32 mpg or better. He recommended that companies aim for a target of at half of their fleet including fuel efficient vehicles, which he feels is reasonable to be achieved industry wide.
