Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia has approved a new concentration for the College of Liberal Arts. The Bachelor of Arts in Social Entrepreneurship degree replaces the program in Leadership and Community Service.

This new trans-disciplinary academic and service-oriented program will start in fall 2011. It is designed to provide students with the values, academic training and skill sets necessary for the creation and management of public service organizations. This includes businesses that put social and environmental concerns above profit, as well as more traditional charitable and religious organizations.

Mercer University’s Board of Trustees has also approved a $193.4 million operating budget for next year, which is an increase of 4% over the previous year. To fund the increased budget, the school is also raising tuition from 3% to 5% on graduate and professional programs.
