In order to change the greedy and consumption-oriented perception of entrepreneurship in America and other countries into something more positive for society, it is necessary to consider what has become known as commonwealth business model. These are enterprises that promote the community-centered and holistic form of wealth that is lacking in the US economy and many other parts of the world today.

Commonwealth enterprises, through the day-to-day activities, benefit all of society. High quality childcare centers are one example of a business with an inherent benefit to society. Urban farms, wind farms and car-sharing services are other good examples of enterprises which not only benefit local economies but civil society overall because they accomplish four important and interrelated things.

These are creating community assets, demanding a diversity of stakeholders, building influence capital for their stakeholders and helping to level the playing field.
