Many young people today want to be entrepreneurs, but starting a small business takes capital.

How to Apply for a Small Business Loan

Especially today, one of the most difficult tasks for small business owners is finding enough capital to start and keep their businesses running smoothly. A small business loan can often make the difference between success and failure, but many loan applications are turned down due to lack of proper preparation.

You should avoid the common error of thinking that you can start with grants from government and community agencies, because this is one of the most unlikely sources of financing available.

The main requirements for getting a small business loan are an excellent personal credit history, business plan, experience, education and being able to prove the feasibility of the business that you are planning to start or expand. Out of all these factors, you should focus the most preparation on the business plan, because this is what will show the lender that providing you with a small business loan is a low-risk proposition.

Small Business Loan Program for Underserved Communities in USA

In a tough economy, getting a small business loan can be challenging for many people who have little more then a good idea. Cathy Hughes, founder of Radio One, is chair of the US Small Business Administration’s newly created Council on Underserved Communities.

She says that the latest initiatives by the agency are designed to help minority entrepreneurs to access financing. This extra focus on underserved small business owners, which include minorities, women, veterans, rural dwellers and young people, comes at a critical time.

Despite growth in the last decade, minority business owners still face more roadblocks in accessing capital. These entrepreneurs are more frequently denied for loans then are their non-minority counterparts, and banks today are still slow to offer loans to any small business owner in a sluggish economy.
