More American universities are offering students the option of a social entrepreneurship degree as they begin to recognize the growing importance of the social enterprise sector of the economy, and seek to prepare students to enter it.
For example, Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee takes a different approach for those who are interested in a “for-benefit” career. These students will be among the first to graduate from the university with a bachelor’s degree in Social Entrepreneurship, and today they are arranging senior internships with local charities.
American universities have been slow to offer degrees in this field but are now being forced to quickly add the programs due to student demand. Students are driven by very personal motivations, such as difficult family or community experiences as well as what they are seeing in the media.
