The Awethu project in South Africa was organized to address the issue of youth unemployment. The success of the project in supporting young entrepreneurs has led to funding of R3 million from Discovery Holdings as well as a social entrepreneurship fellowship from Echoing Green.

The Awethu project was founded by two young South Africans who wanted to find a solution to one of the country’s greatest problems. The Awethu Project is designed to encourage entrepreneurship as a solution to youth unemployment. They have developed a process to assess the potential of business ideas from young people using non-traditional metrics.

Their talent identification process has so far selected four entrepreneurs from a total of 1,700 applicants. These four distinguished themselves by outperforming on a range of psychometric and cognitive tests designed to measure entrepreneurship potential.
