At the recent Latin Alternative Music Conference, an inspiring panel discussion focused on the story of Juan Miguel Marin of the group La Casa del Ritmo. Marin was able to use the social entrepreneurship funding platform Kickstarter to raise all the funds necessary to create a documentary on the alternative Latin band called Los Amigos Invisibles.

He surpassed his goal of $30,000 in 1 month to end up with $31,500. In return for their investment, funders could choose to receive packages including DVDs of the documentary, screen credits, and T-shirts. They were even offering a home screening performance for a $5,000 investment, although no one ended up qualifying for that one. This was an encouraging success story amid an otherwise gloomy backdrop at the conference on the state of investment in the alternative music industry.
