Social entrepreneurship organizations like Room to Read inspire education in some of the areas where it’s needed most. Room to Read was founded by John Wood, and the organization now operates on an international scale to transform children’s lives through literacy.

A special focus is placed on educating young girls to work toward gender equality in education. When asked about what inspired him to start Room to Read, Wood said it came down to a simple conversation many years ago in Nepal. The head of a local school there asked him if he would return some day with some books for the students.

At the time, Wood was a Microsoft employee on vacation. He loved to read as a kid, and was pained to see that a school “library” in rural Nepal had not a single book, let alone desks, chairs or shelves. He took the simple request of the schoolmaster as a personal challenge and vowed to help them.
