A recent study on social entrepreneurship in South Africa highlights the important role of small business in improving the environment and tackling community problems.
The University of Cape Town published a study that showed a broad lack of confidence among citizens that the government on nonprofit sector could provide answers to the biggest problems facing the country. Social entrepreneurs provide some fresh alternatives as they tackle social problems from a business perspective. The researchers conclude that the role of social entrepreneurship is likely to grow in coming years as governments and charities lack funds to address social problems due to slow economic growth or recession.
Given the level of development of the South African economy, the report finds that it lags some of its peers in terms of social entrepreneurship activity.
