The Secretary-General of the UN recently spoke about the importance of co-ops in furthering youth social entrepreneurship and reducing unemployment among young people.

Ban Ki-moon noted that the global financial crisis has severely exacerbated youth unemployment worldwide, and there is an urgent need to promote youth entrepreneurship as a way of combating it. The co-op model is an excellent way to do this, as it helps enable young people to start and operate sustainable businesses. The ethical focus of co-ops has made the model resilient and it has prospered even during the more difficult economic times.

Co-ops are also known for their role in providing credit and support to small business owners in developing countries, as they help to build a culture of self-reliance. Ban urged young people around the world to explore the opportunities that the co-op model presents.
