Social entrepreneurship education, according to a recent New York Times article, has become the major du jour for the global elite. The burgeoning popularity of this major is causing a brain drain in traditional MBA programs as the best and brightest students are being drawn to social entrepreneurship graduate programs or hands-on work programs like Teach for America.
These programs appeal to the the unique and complex blend of selfishness and altruism which is common to all human beings in a particularly attractive way. The idea that we can save the world, make a profit and increase our education level through one solution is hard to resist. However, some would argue that there is too much idealism in social entrepreneurship education, and that it ignores the unpleasant realities of power, politics and predation which still govern the real world.
