Ramesh Kumar is an inspiring Indian social entrepreneur who is a model for many young entrepreneurs in the country. Yet he has done his best to avoid the media spotlight as bringing fame to himself runs contrary to his spiritual philosophy. He would rather that the media focus on his mission to use social enterprise to bring banking to the poor and encourage rural development.

His vision includes various programs for rural financing, alternative energy, women’s empowerment, affordable housing, access to better sanitation and nutrition for everyone. Kumar, a professional banker by training, has long been drawn to the idea of social enterprise before it became a catchphrase. He long ago chose to give up the monetary rewards of corporate banking to pursue his ethical vision of empowering India’s rural poor.
