The vice-chancellor of the University of Northampton has big plans for the university to become a UK leader in social entrepreneurship ideas. He believes this will give it a considerable advantage in attracting students who are taking greater interest in this cutting edge concept.
The university’s goal is to offer all its undergraduates the opportunity to work in a social enterprise within five years, although they would not make it a compulsory requirement. The university wants to be actively involved on the funding side of social enterprise as well, but using its increased Higher Education Innovation Fund allocation to provide seed funding for individuals both inside and outside the school to establish social enterprises.
Towards this end, Northampton teamed up with The Young Foundation to recruit their first social entrepreneur in residence, Wray Irwin, who will scour the university for ideas for establishing social enterprises.
