Many of you worldchangers out there may be keen to make a difference by actually starting up a non profit organization yourself. But you might be wondering, where do I start? Or, what business to start? It’s actually one of my goals, too. What’s involved in setting up a nonprofit?
There are some basic steps to follow in order to set up a non profit organization in the US.
The structure of every new non profit must include a number of basic operational functions to ensure its survival, including the development of a business plan, a mission statement, a budget, articles of incorporation and bylaws. The founders of a new non profit organization must also check with their state office for small business in order to learn about the requirement which govern non profits in their state.
These laws differ between states so it is often necessary to contact the state AG office to find out all the details. Another important step for new non profits is to check with the IRS in order to learn which forms must be filed and apply for tax classification. Whether you are thinking of starting a business or a charity, it is important to first reflect on what business to start and how do you want to make a difference.
