TED Talk By Bruce Aylward on How to Stop Polio
In a recent TED Talk, Dr. Bruce Aylward says that polio is almost completely eradicated, but that isn’t good enough for such a serious disease. He laid out his plans to continue the scientific miracle that can snuff out this terrible disease forever.
Dr. Aylward says that most people today take for granted the polio vaccine, but that it’s one of the technologies that has changed the world in a big way. Before the vaccine polio would cause huge panics in the US and around the world. The disease paralyzed perfectly healthy people who were forced to spend the rest of their lives in an iron lung in order to breathe.
The polio vaccine in the late 1950′s was a scientific miracle that was the result of a 20 year development effort funded by the US government. The vaccine quickly wiped out the disease in the US, but it still exists today in some parts of the world and has the potential to spread.
